Rainer Ganahl (born 1961) is an Austrian artist living and working in New York. His work has been shown internationally including the Venice Biennial (1999, 2007, 2009) the Shanghai Biennial (2008) and the Athens Biennial (2013). His latest installation “El Mundo” was recently listed as one of the top exhibitions of 2014 by the New York Times. The Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC, has just acquired “El Mundo” for its permanent collection.
The video we are proposing today, was shot in 2003. Although it is 12 years old, the video is very up-to-date and it addresses challenges and fears we are experiencing today, especially those connected to terrorism, fanaticism, and security. As stated in the artist’s website, this video represents a continuation of his language-based video works “Basic Feelings” and “Basic Conflicts.” “The principle is always the same: a given sentence is uttered by me in all of the 11 languages I have been learning so far. In a situation comparable with that of a language lab, I repeat the same sentence in all these different languages touching on humor, absurdity and paranoia.”

Il suo lavoro è stato esposto a livello internazionale, inclusa la Biennale di Venezia (1999, 2007, 2009), la Biennale di Shanghai (2008) e la Biennale di Atene (2013). Il suo progetto “El Mundo” è stato inserito dal New York Times tra le migliori proposte del 2014. L’Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden dello Smithsonian a Washington, DC, ha appena acquisito “El Mundo” per la sua collezione permanente.
Il video che vi proponiamo oggi è stato girato nel 2003. Sebbene abbia ormai diversi anni, il video è attualissimo e affronta sfide e paure che stiamo vivendo ancora oggi, in particolare quelle legate al terrorismo, al fanatismo e alla sicurezza. Come dichiarato sul sito dell’artista, questo video rappresenta la continuazione dei suoi lavori video basati sul linguaggio “Basic Feelings” e “Basic Conflicts”. “Il principio è sempre lo stesso: una determinata frase viene pronunciata da me in tutte le 11 lingue che ho imparato finora. In una situazione paragonabile a quella di un laboratorio linguistico, ripeto la stessa frase in tutte queste diverse lingue toccando l’ironia, l’assurdità e la paranoia”.
