ABOUT:
“This series was born from the experience of having a complex relationship with my six sisters (3 half and 3 step). I was drawn to the Three Sister Mountains of the Cascade Range while doing research as a artist-in-residence at Caldera Arts Center in Sisters (OR); that lead to a discovery of Three Sister stories spanning across multiple countries and centuries. I decided to focus on stories that I could relate to my own experiences and background. This exploration brought me to Part II: SustainABLE, which references a Native American/Mesoamerican story of Three Sisters: Corn, Squash, and Beans that is still currently told annually at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh by Shelia Wilson a Sappony Tribe member. I worked with organic farmers throughout the North Carolina tri-state area while an Artist-in-Residence at Elsewhere Living Museum in Greensboro. To conclude the project there was a reading of the story, screening of the video, and communal Three Sisters Dinner.” Lani Asuncion
